School of Environmental Technology

SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY

The School of Environmental Technology was started in 1982 with only the department of Estate Management. Today the school has five departments.

All the Departments run both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes with the exception of the departments of Building Technology. These programmes are accredited by the National Board for Technical Education.

The school is made up of the following departments:

  1. Department of Estate Management
  2. Department of Architecture
  3. Department of Building Technology
  4. Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics
  5. Department of Quantity Surveying
  6. Department of Urban and Regional Planning

The names of the Directors/Deans of the School from inception are:

Since its inception, there have been a lot of developments.  These include structural and physical development such as the two new storey buildings to house the entire academic staff of the school, acquisition of modern teaching aids such as the new Computer poll and multimedia for PowerPoint presentation, qualified teaching, technical and accreditation of programmes.

The school has the following departments:-

The Department was established in August, 1980 offering only the National Diploma programme.  In 1982 the Higher National Diploma was introduced. Both the ND and HND programme were accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1985.  Subsequently both programmes became accredited professionally by the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyor and Valuers and the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board.

The Department is currently in process of offering Postgraduate Diploma in Estate Management in collaboration with Polytechnic Consultancy Limited.

The Department was established in 1985 with an initial intake of 15 students for the National Diploma Programme.

The courses run by the department are as follows:-

  1. Higher National Diploma
  2. National Diploma

Facilities

The Department is equipped with the following facilities among other things:-

  1. Archi-Cad Computer Studio
  2. 3 drawing Studios/Lecture Halls
  3. Plan Printing Machine
  4. Manually operated concrete files moulding machine
  5. Stabilized earth brick moulding machine
  6. Secretarial equipments.

The Department though quite young, has contributed in several ways to the development of the Polytechnic.  Just to mention a few things, the department made the following designs for the Polytechnic.

  1. Design of the proposed Polytechnic Staff Secondary School
  2. Design/Bill of Quantity for the proposed mud oven for the department of Food

Science and Technology.

  1. Modification of the School of Environmental Technology
  2. Design of a proposed grand stand for the Polytechnic Football field/track
  3. Design of a proposed places of worship for bother Christians and Moslems in

the Institution

  1. Design of a proposed Staff Club Complex
  2. Design and supervision of POLYCON new head office

 

The department has a staff strength of 20 made up of 16 Academic staff and 4 supporting staff. The list of those who administered the department is as stated below:-

The Academic Board approved the Academic program of the Department in 1982. Up to 1995/96 Session, the department offered only National Diploma (ND). At the beginning of 1996/97 session, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) gave approval for the commencement of Higher National Diploma (HND) in Land Surveying. With the new trend in Surveying, the name Land Surveying was however changed to Surveying and Geo-Informatics and subsequent approval obtained from the NBTE in 2002 making it the first and only Polytechnic to be accredited in this field. Re-accreditation exercise of HND and ND programmes where conducted two times by both NBTE and SURCON, the results of which were successful.

Objectives of the Department

The aims of the department are to provide middle level manpower Technicians and Technologists who would be adequately sound and exposed in both practical and theoretical aspects of Surveying and Geo-Informatics.  To achieve the set objectives, the department currently offers courses leading to the award of HND and ND in Surveying and Geo-informatics.

The Department has adequate number of surveying equipment to take care of its training needs. In addition to that, it has recently acquired additional modern instruments and equipments such as:

The Department was officially given approval to commence the National Diploma (ND) in Building Technology by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) on the 25th February, 2003. The Department had graduated students since 2004/2005 session.

The Department started with four (4) academic staff but now it has seven (7) academic staff and three (3) Non-Academic staff.

The Quantity Surveying programme was granted approval to commence the National Diploma in Quantity Surveying by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) on the 25th February, 2003.

The first intake was taken in 2003/2004 session with a class size of 25 students. The Department graduated its first of National Diploma students in 2004/2005 session.
